Michael Sean Marye is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, coach and visual artist.
He has had a thirty year career as a dancer, performing extensively throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia. He began his performance career with the Toronto Dance Theatre, working with choreographers David Earle, Peter Randazzo, Patricia Beatty, Christopher House and James Kudelka. He has also worked with numerous companies and choreographers in Canada and the United States, including Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie (Bill Coleman and James Kudelka), Doug Varone and Dancers (Doug Varone), Signal Theatre (Michael Greyeyes and Nancy Greyeyes), Volcano Theatre and Overall Dance (Kate Alton), Peggy Baker Dance Projects and Art of Time Ensemble (James Kudelka), Dancetheatre David Earle (David Earle), Chartier Danse (Marie Josee Chartier), Cloud 9 (Tedd Robinson), Kaeja d’Dance (Allen Kaeja), Tribal Crackling Wind (Peter Chin), Julia Sasso Dances (Julia Sasso) and Dreamwalker Dance Company (Andrea Nann). He partnered Veronica Tennant in a 22 city national tour of the stage production of The Piano Man’s Daughter, with Timothy Findley, Sylvia Tyson, Joe Sealy and Jack Nicholson. He has also been featured in a number of dance films.
His choreography, which has been presented across Canada and has been nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award (Toronto), includes commissions for dance companies (including Toronto Dance Theatre and Overall Dance), dance institutions (York University and L’école de danse du Québec) and independent film and theatre productions. His choreographic explorations have often included multi-disciplinary elements, and he has worked alone, and with others, to create sound scores and compositions to accompany his choreography. A former professional woodworker, he has also worked alone, and with others, to design and build sets and other production elements for his creative works. A renewed interest in photography and visual art has also led him to incorporate these additional multi-disciplinary elements as part of his artistic expression.
As a rehearsal director and coach, he has worked with companies such as Ballet B.C., Toronto Dance Theatre, Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie and Balet Bratislava. He also created and produced an independent modern dance summer school for professional dance students, called Breaking Ground, which operated in Toronto for over four years. He has taught dance at other Canadian dance institutions, including York University, School of Toronto Dance Theatre and L’école de danse du Québec.
He began his dance training in Buffalo, New York. He continued his studies at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, L’école Superieure de Danse du Quebec and the School of Toronto Dance Theatre. He attended the University of Toronto as an undergraduate student and he holds an MA in dance from York University.
